Friday, April 23

8:00pm to 12:00am
Tickets: Adult - $15.00

Jazzmania, the Georgian Sound Festival's lead off event is a "musical pub crawl" featuring ten live jazz bands playing at ten different jazz hot spots throughout Thornbury and Clarksburg.

One ticket gets you in to all ten hot spots but, if you wish to have dinner, make a reservation separately with the restaurant hot spot of your choice.

The free Jazzmania buses that ferry you from place to place are often as much fun as the jazz hot spots themselves. And the bus drivers can help you pick stops with limited wait time. As a hint, if you visit the jazz hot spots that do not accept dinner reservations first, you can often get "ring side" seats and then move on to the dinner hot spots later in the evening.

Park where you wish in town, and flag a bus outside any jazz hotspot. But whatever you do, PLEASE don't drink and drive!

The Kenny Baldwin Jazz Trio & Christine Frolick

Kenny Baldwin, born in London England and inspired by the music of the Count Basie Band and the legendary Charlie Parker, took up the saxophone and today plays all three alto, tenor and soprano saxophones. Kenny worked for many years as a jazz musician in Toronto, with his own quartet, and also played with touring performers such as Mel Torme, Natalie Cole and Cab Calloway at venues such as the Imperial Room at the Royal York; the Old Mill; the Colonial and the O'Keefe Centre (now the Sony Centre).

Christine Frolick has been singing jazz in Toronto and throughout Southern Ontario for about 16 years, but her professional singing career also has encompassed classical music, "new music", pop and musical theatre in equal measure. The St. Lawrence Centre, C.B.C. Radio's "Two New Hours", C.B.C. TV, and Toronto concert halls are just some of the venues in which Christine has found expression for her musical and theatrical talent. This is her first appearance at the Georgian Sound Festival.

Bobby Dean Blackburn Trio

A career that dates back to the 1950s is part of the story of this popular Stokes Bay-based entertainer. Bobby Dean Blackburn, led his own rhythm-and-blues combo, Bobby Dean and the Gems, playing regular Saturday gigs between features at a Toronto movie house in the 1950s and '60s. Later, he started playing in the house band at Toronto's Zanzibar Tavern. During that era which lasted into the '70s, Blackburn could be found each Saturday afternoon hosting a popular jam that attracted musicians from other area taverns.

Meetings with some of his idols, such as Fats Domino and B.B. King, are among Blackburn's career highlights, but the greatest moments, he said, have come while playing R&B with his sons Brook and Cory. Blackburn is a regular at pubs and restaurants across the southern Georgian Bay region where his versatile, dynamic, soulful sound is a popular attraction.

Blue Room Blues Band

The core musicians of BLUE ROOM are veteran live and studio players, featuring: Brian Neller's big, bluesy, passionate vocals; Fraser Lawrason's solid bass lines and backing vocals; Paul Sanderson's soaring blues rock guitar; Norm Ryan's fluid and inspired saxophone; Frank Watt and Pat Quinn's seasoned drum grooves.

Blue Room was a finalist in the 1997 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search, runner-up in 1998, and second runner-up in 2000! Since 1997, the band has played in major blues venues around Toronto, including the Silver Dollar Room, The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, and Chicago's. Sharing the bill with the likes of John Hammond and Jully Black, Blue Room has also played the JVC Jazz Festival, The Beaches International Jazz Festival, First Night Toronto at the SkyDome, and Lloyd's Blues Music Festival, featuring B.B. King, and Buddy Guy.

It's fairly difficult not to like a tightly cohesive band with a great vocalist, and this one is no exception. Brian Neller mans the lead microphone with an alternating croon and slightly nasal grittiness that always complements the various musical styles exhibited here.
